Description
The Royal Gurkha Rifles is a regiment of the British Army that is part of the Brigade of Gurkhas. The history of the Gurkhas dates back to the early 19th century when they were recruited from the hilly regions of Nepal. The Royal Gurkha Rifles itself was formed in 1994 through the amalgamation of two existing Gurkha regiments: the 2nd King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles and the 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles.
Gurkhas are renowned for their bravery, discipline, and loyalty, and they have a distinguished record of service in various conflicts around the world. The regiment is known for its exceptional soldiers, who are skilled in light infantry tactics, and they have served in numerous operations, including peacekeeping missions, counterinsurgency operations, and combat deployments.
The Royal Gurkha Rifles are recognized for their distinctive traditions, including the wearing of the traditional Gurkha dress and the use of the kukri, a traditional Nepali knife that is both a symbol of their heritage and a practical tool.
The regiment continues to serve in the British Army, contributing to various operations and maintaining the proud legacy of the Gurkhas as elite soldiers.
